January 29th in Cleveland,Ohio Team Sweet Science battled at the National Solvien Ballroom. Justin Mathews had a rough night as he engaged in a bloody war with a local Cleveland fighter. The fight was stopped in the second round. Up next for his amateur debut was the fighting photographer Eddie Yu vs Westside Boxing’s Al Pugh. First round, Eddie quickly began out boxing his opponent landing hard, clean shots and displaying good head movement. Second round most of the same with Eddie landing a stiff jab that received an 8-count from the ref. The 3rd and final round saw Eddie throwing crisp combos, slipping almost all shots thrown nearly stopping his game but outmatched opponent. Outstanding Debut for Eddie Yu! Featured in the Co-Main event of the night was “Iron” Dan Crabtree (whom had just fought the night before in Toledo)vs Levi Patterson of Cleveland in a 3 round, 3 minute bout in the open division. This fight had the feel of a pro bout from the onset as both fighters came out to the ring with intro music and all eyes were glued on the two strapping young men as they prepared to engage in battle. Round 1 had the taller Patterson boxing well using his jab and excellent footwork to evade Crabtree while “Iron” Dan slipped most of the Cleveland boxer’s blows while landing some hard hooks to head and body. Round 2 saw Levi attempt to take charge as he dug in hard shots to the body of Crabtree while the highly focused Crabtree countered with hard punches and continued to utilize superb head movement. In the final round, the crowd was on their feet as the two men battled both taking turns landing vicious blows with Patterson being visually shaken by a huge left hook from the hard punching Hilliard boxer “Iron” Dan. Levi Patterson held on to get the nod when the decision was read in this very exciting and close fight of the night! All in all it was a good showing as we once again demonstrated our superiority in the “hurt business”!

At the Fight for Victory Charity Event held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Toledo, Ohio ,Sweet Science amateurs fought hard and well. Miles Delmindo up first, lost a close decision to a young boxer from Toledo Boxing Club. Danny Pietch easily won a decision against Tom Howard by utilizing an effective body assault and relentless pressure. “Iron” Dan Crabtree lost a close and hard fought decision landing the cleaner, more effective shots. Good Job to our amateurs!! Stay tuned on May 5th, Team Sweet Science will fight again for a Toledo Boxing Club Charity Event.

Robbery in Indiana!

Posted by mikayla under Uncategorized

On January 16th, 2011, in Terre Haute, Indiana site of the 2011 Regional Silver gloves Miles “The Phil-Am Phenom” Delmindo arguably became the best and most ripped off amateur boxer in the sport! If one was to have observed Delmindo’s bout in the State Silver gloves they would have came to the conclusion that young Miles had become the victim of a robbery, but after having observed “The Phil-Am Phenoms” bout vs Tyrone Triplett (Crown Boxing,Lansing Mich) observers would have been unable to describe the unjust outcome and would’ve been left speechless. With only 8 fights Miles Delmindo beat and outboxed two certified National Champions within a two week time period. However due to the unnecessary politics involved Triplett advanced to the Nationals while Miles reflects on the situation from his home in Pataskala. In the fight with Triplett, Miles displayed his incredible defense by slipping and blocking nearly everything thrown by the Michigan fighter while letting off blistering 3 and 4 punch combinations that managed to find their mark with amazing accuracy. This went on for the majority of the 3 round bout until the bell sounded. Before the decision was rendered everyone in the house was shocked and stunned at the perceived defeat of Triplett at the hands of a relatively inexperienced and unknown fighter in Delmindo! However when the decision was read it was Triplett’s hand that was raised in triumph, and to the young Tyrone Triplett’s credit the body language he displayed was overwhelming dissatisfaction with his performance and the outcome Triplett quickly dropped his hand and walked off without his medal and told Delmindo that he had won the fight (If only the judges and officials involved in boxing were as classy!). Nonetheless we wish the young man the best of luck in the Nationals and hope to see him again in the future. Keep in mind atrocities like this is what motivates us to be the best we can be and hopefully we will be put in position in the near future to fix what’s broken with the amateur program and boxing in general. Be sure to view the fight on youtube and come to your own conclusion. We are very proud of Miles and he knows it!

2011 Regional Silver Gloves

Posted by mikayla under Events

Saturday January 15th, Miles Delmindo will represent Sweet Science and Ohio in the Regional Silver gloves tournament for the 156lb division in Terre Haute, Indiana. Stay posted for the results!

Team Sweet Science put out an impressive performance that garnered many compliments from coaches and other boxers. Up first for Team SS was 11 year old, 105 lb Jesse Dombroski who had to cut a pound before the weigh in by running laps around the building wearing 2 heavy coats! After making weight we learned Jesse would be facing Jermaine Woodard who had over 25 fights, they recommended to bump Jesse up to unopposed but we knew they hadn’t seen an opponent like Jesse “The Bull” and he would be able to give him all he could handle, which proved to be true! Jesse landed hard shots and pressed the action displaying great head movement and skill. When the decision was rendered Jermaine Woodard of Blackburn Rec advanced by a close decision and Jesse was proud to get one in the books. Nico “The Italian Stallion” Buoni was up next for Sweet Science facing Jamall Jabar of Blackburn Rec. Nico kept up the pace from the opening bell with crisp shots and slipping, he clearly out boxed his more experienced opponent but when the judges scored the bout they had Nico coming in short of the win. Team SS was disappointed by the decision because we all knew Nico had gotten robbed of the victory, nevertheless he will train hard and continue his quest to be the best! Kevin Lark was supposed to represent team sweet science in the 139 lb senior division, however due to a temporary lack of discipline young Lark ended up weighing in at 144 lbs, thus “stepping” on junior team captain Miles “The Phil-Am phenom” Delmindo who was to represent us in the 147lbs senior division. Luckily when the cards were drawn Miles got a bye going to straight to the championship and Kevin drew Darrell Gibbs of Thompson Rec a 2X National Champion with over 60 fights. Even though Lark had only had 2 fights he rose to the occasion and fought well against the significantly more experienced Gibbs. From the opening bell on Lark was unrelenting with his assault, never allowing Gibbs to catch a rhythm and in the end Lark fell short of the decision and Gibbs advanced to the Championship bout against Miles Delmindo. In that fight, Gibbs had trouble with the ultra slick and super skilled “Phil-Am Phenom”. When the opening bell sounded, Gibbs stormed from his corner and let off a blazing four punch combination with every blow falling short of its mark due to Delmindo’s impeccable defense and head movement. After more of the same, Miles began to land counter left hooks and looping right hands frustrating the “Young Gunner”. Miles came out on the short end when the decision was rendered and the normally cool, calm, and collected Coach Russ Niggemyer proceeded to go ape and let the USA Boxing officials know exactly what was on his mind prompting much praise from the crowd and other coaches for saying what needed to be said. We are very proud of our boxers and firmly believe had there been no politics involved we very well could have swept the tournament thus proving our superiority over all the other boxing clubs in the area (Blackburn, Thompson). Delmindo was given the 156 lb slot for the Regional Silver gloves that will take place next week in Terre Haute, Indiana.
