August 12th , 2011 , The Dayton Dragons (minor league baseball team ) and Prime Performance Boxing (Milton Pearson) had their annual Fight Night at Fifth Third field with a great turnout with lots of support from the local community. Team Sweet Science was scheduled for a double header with Derrell “Young Gunner” Gibbs taking on Boubacar “Warrior” Sylla of Cincinnati, Ohio and J’juan “Don Juan” Hamilton pitted against the Nationally recognized Kenny Thomas Jr. of Indianapolis , Indiana. Up to bat first for Sweet Science Boxing was the ” Young Gunner ” vs Sylla, round 1 had both young men feeling each other out with Sylla popping out the occasional jab followed by a right hand while Gibbs controlled the pace with his southpaw jab and excellent footwork. Gibbs began to “power up” letting off 3 and 4 punch combos in staccato burst. Round 2 saw more of the same with Gibbs showing excellent head movement and defense while landing left hand leads followed by hard body shots. Boubacar seemed to momentarily gain some ground on the “Young Gunner” by landing 3 or 4 hard shots in procession to the dome of Gibbs before the Columbus fighter fired back in retaliation retaking control of the fight. The 3rd and final round had both young men “going in” and swinging for the fences to great fan fare and when the dust settled and the verdict was read the ” Young Gunner ” put his pistols back in their holsters and had his hand raised in triumph. Good job to Boubacar “Warrior” Sylla! Up next batting clean up for Team Sweet Science was “Don Juan” Hamilton vs Kenny Thomas Jr. Hamilton was excited all week once he learned he’d be fighting a boxer the caliber of Thomas Jr. J’juan realizes in this game, to be the best you have to fight and beat the best! And Hamilton set out to do just that. As round 1 commenced, “Don Juan” and Thomas Jr. began to trade lightening fast jabs with Hamilton displaying excellent head movement and Round 2 both young warriors seemed to pick the pace up a bit by working behind their jabs and letting off some fireworks in the center of the ring. Third round saw the two fighters stand in the center of the ring again testing eachother’s chins with hard counter left hooks and right hands. When the judges decision was rendered, it was Kenny Thomas Jr. of Indiana that got the victory. Congrats to Kenny Thomas Jr. and we look forward to seeing him do big things in the future! We are very proud of both Hamilton and Gibbs for not only performing so well, but also for representing our team, their parents , and most importantly themselves with class and honor. Special Thanks goes out to Coach Milt Pearson and Prime Performance Boxing. You have to be at this event to truly appreciate its magnitude and the positive impact it has for the city of Dayton , the youth , and boxing in general. The bouts were televised and professional video will be posted soon.
